2011 Chicago NEA RA Meeting

June 30th, 2011

The National Education Association Substitute Teachers’ Caucus will be meeting at the McCormick Place  Convention Center in Chicago from June 30 till July 5.  The goal is to promote collective bargaining rights for substitute teachers, to improve their wages and working conditions, to encourage professional development and improvement of the substitute teaching workforce, and to provide an information clearinghouse on substitute teacher rights.

As you know Substitute Teachers teach every child in America. And the only way a teacher gets better is from the experience they get from working long enough in the profession. Substitute Teachers account for one to two years of every student’s education which figures to an average of 20 to 40 days per year per classroom. The numbers are closer to the higher end for the more difficult schools and classrooms.

The only way to professionalize this 10% to 20% of a student’s education is to professionalize the status and treatment of Substitute Teachers in the State Ed Codes. Working together with the community of parents, educators, business leaders and legislators we can ensure that every day is an important learning day for all of our students.

The NEA Substitute Teacher Caucus welcomes everyone

June 26th, 2008

The NEA Substitute Teacher Caucus welcomes all Substitute Teachers to our meetings at the 2008 NEA Representative Assembly in Washington D.C., July 1-6.

Substitute Teachers account for 10% to 20% of every student’s education which amounts to 1 to 2 years of their education. We will be working on professionalizing the teaching provided by Substitute Teachers through increased pay, treatment and training. This is an opportunity to improve the education of students by 10% to 20% without lengthening their school day or year.
